東京都世田谷区出身。一般社団法人落語協会所属。日本大学商学部経営学科卒業。1989年（平成元年）、柳家さん喬に入門、2000年に真打昇進。一貫して自作の爆笑新作、そして対極とも言える三遊亭円朝作品等の古典落語を演じ続け、それぞれに確固たる地位を築いている。過去数々の賞に輝き、2006年（平成18年）には芸術選奨新人賞を受賞。また、その独特の存在感で俳優としても活躍中。最近の出演作に、NHK「昭和元禄落語心中」（落語監修も担当）、CMキリン『キリン・ザ・ストロング』、映画『スプリング、ハズ、カム（吉野竜平監督・主演肇役）』、舞台 こまつ座第121回公演『たいこどんどん』（主演）、ペテカン／トリックスターエンタテインメント『ハンバーグができるまで』（原作・出演）など。
大阪出身。渡辺正行・小宮孝泰とコント赤信号を結成し、1980年花王名人劇場にてテレビデビュー。タレントとしてだけでなく、俳優としても出演多数。「こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所」では両津勘吉役を長くつとめる。書籍、エッセイも執筆。脚本・演出家としては小劇場から商業演劇まで幅広く作品を手掛け、2015年に原案・作詞・演出を担ったKAAT主催オリジナルミュージカル『HEADS UP！』で第23回読売演劇大賞優秀演出家賞受賞。最近の主な出演舞台作品に、こまつ座『円生と志ん生』、伊坂幸太郎原作『死神の精度』、新感線☆RS『メタルマクベスdisc3』、『星屑の町』、熱海五郎一座新橋演舞場公演などが、また演出作品に『夫婦漫才』、こまつ座『たいこどんどん』、『志村魂』などがある。Attention
