一方、今作『ザ・ドクター』では主人公の医師ルースを筆頭に、登場人物がまるで自身の存在証明のように、膨大な言葉を語り続ける。人種、信仰、仕事上の信条、セクシャリティ……etc。演出を手掛ける栗山民也は一読して、「最先端の医療現場ですら改善されていない構造的な歪み、歴史認識やジェンダー、人権をめぐる問題までが絡み合い、自分たちで築いてきた社会の仕組みに縛られ、喘ぐ人間の姿が生々しく浮かび上がる。新聞の一面から順に、トピックとなる記事をモンタージュしたような刺激的な作品」と感じたと言う。
稽古開始から2週間ほどの某日。覗いた稽古場は照明の光量が絞られており、舞台上の、医師たちが会議のために集まる大きな机の周辺だけが浮かび上がって見えた。稽古していたシーンは、ルースをめぐる世論が次第に厳しいものとなり、会議の中で同僚の医師たち個々の思惑が明らかになっていくというもの。大きな動きはないが、大竹しのぶ演じるルースを、飛び交う言葉が縛り上げていくのが見えるようだ。議論が進むほどに空気は熱を帯び、見ているこちらの動悸まで速くなる。言葉の強弱や速度、視線の向き、役の感情を示す所作まで細やかにアドバイスする演出家の言葉が、場のテンションをどんどん上げていく。作品ページへ
